#BookReview The Never Game by Jeffery Deaver @FreshFiction @JefferyDeaver @PutnamBooks

The Never Game by Jeffery Deaver
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

From the bestselling and award-winning master of suspense, the first novel in a thrilling new series, introducing Colter Shaw.

"You have been abandoned."

A young woman has gone missing in Silicon Valley and her father has hired Colter Shaw to find her. The son of a survivalist family, Shaw is an expert tracker. Now he makes a living as a "reward seeker," traveling the country to help police solve crimes and private citizens locate missing persons. But what seems a simple investigation quickly thrusts him into the dark heart of America's tech hub and the cutthroat billion-dollar video-gaming industry.

"Escape if you can."

When another victim is kidnapped, the clues point to one video game with a troubled past--The Whispering Man. In that game, the player has to survive after being abandoned in an inhospitable setting with five random objects. Is a madman bringing the game to life?

"Or die with dignity."

Shaw finds himself caught in a cat-and-mouse game, risking his own life to save the victims even as he pursues the kidnapper across both Silicon Valley and the dark 'net. Encountering eccentric game designers, trigger-happy gamers and ruthless tech titans, he soon learns that he isn't the only one on the hunt: someone is on his trail and closing fast.

As a big fan of the Lincoln Rhyme series by Jefferey Deaver was I curious to see how THE NEVER GAME, the first book in Deaver's new series, would turn out. Would this book appeal to just as much as the Lincoln Rhyme books did? In this book, are we introduced to Colter Shaw, an expert at tracking people down, thanks to his upbringing with a father who uprooted the whole family to live off the grid. Now, he's been contacted by a man in Silicon Valley whose daughter has gone missing. It soon turns out that this is just the first missing case he has to deal with in Silicon Valley.

DANGEROUSLY GOOD. DISTINCTIVELY DEAVER.

Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs return to New York City to confront a killer terrorizing couples at their happiest--and most vulnerable.

In the early hours of a quiet, weekend morning in Manhattan's Diamond District, a brutal triple murder shocks the city. Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs quickly take the case. Curiously, the killer has left behind a half-million dollars' worth of gems at the murder scene, a jewelry store on 47th street. As more crimes follow, it becomes clear that the killer's target is not gems, but engaged couples themselves.

The Promisor vows to take the lives of men and women during their most precious moments--midway through the purchase of an engagement ring, after a meeting with a wedding planner, trying on the perfect gown for a day that will never come. The Promisor arrives silently, armed with knife or gun, and a time of bliss is transformed, in an instant, to one of horror.

Soon the Promiser makes a dangerous mistake: leaving behind an innocent witness, Vimal Lahori, a talented young diamond cutter, who can help Rhyme and Sachs blow the lid off the case. They must track down Vimal before the killer can correct his fatal error. Then disaster strikes, threatening to tear apart the very fabric of the city--and providing the perfect cover for the killer to slip through the cracks.

**********

I can always count on Jefferey Deaver to deliver a well-written crime novel where nothing is at it seems. If you have read Deavers previous books, then you know what I mean. That is why I suspected that not everything is what it seemed when everything seemed to go smoothly in the book.

Newly married Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs are tasked with finding not only a crazed killer that seemed to be targeting couples that are to be married but also a witness to the first crime. A triple murder in Manhattan's Diamond District. Of course, this is not easy tasks, the killer is maiming and killing his way and looking for the young witness while the witness tries to get away from the town.

And, this is just a small fraction of the story. And, the rest of it well spoilers! It's darn hard to review a book like this because there are so many things going on that you just need to find out for yourself when you read the book. All I can say that Jeffrey Deaver has done it again! As usual! The book is thick, but never boring, filled with fabulous twist and an absolutely marvelous ending. Kind of cliffhanger-ish, but still a satisfying ending. I had a blast reading this book and it's a series that keep going strong with each book deliver a satisfying story. I can't wait to read the next book!

If you have never read a Jeffery Deaver book before, then I urge you to do so. Start with the first book in the Lincoln Rhyme series, The Bone Collector!

PRAISE FOR THE BURIAL HOUR:

"Deaver is a master of plot twists, and they are abundant in this story that keeps the reader guessing about who can be trusted and what's behind the motivations of the abductor. Putting Rhyme and Sachs in unknown territory showcases a different side of their characters. Making them jump through hoops to keep international peace gives the story an extra edge."
--- Associated Press

"Jeffery Deaver's forte is the diabolical puzzle mystery, and THE BURIAL HOUR is so devilishly tricky you can practically smell the sulfur fumes... In a bold plot twist, Deaver folds Rhyme's inquiries into a broader investigation of a humanitarian challenge shared by the whole world. Takes guts, that does."
--- New York Times Book Review

"THE BURIAL HOUR proves once again Jeffery Deaver is a brilliantly intricate novelist. THE BURIAL HOUR is lucky number thirteen in the Lincoln Rhyme/Amelia Sachs series. Taking Rhyme and Sachs out of their New York locale appears to rejuvenate Deaver and his story. Deaver has been writing novels for many years and he has never once disappointed me. Intriguingly detailed."

#Wishlist Highly Anticipated Thrillers Published in 2018

As 2018 is getting closer and closer did I think that Novembers wishlist should be about 5 thriller books that I really look forward to reading. What the books have in common is that I've previously read and loved books by the authors.

**********

When Grace Ozmian, the beautiful and reckless daughter of a wealthy tech billionaire, first goes missing, the NYPD assumes she has simply sped off on another wild adventure. Until the young woman's body is discovered in an abandoned warehouse in Queens, the head nowhere to be found.

Lieutenant CDS Vincent D'Agosta quickly takes the lead. He knows his investigation will attract fierce scrutiny, so D'Agosta is delighted when FBI Special Agent A.X.L. Pendergast shows up at the crime scene assigned to the case. "I feel rather like Brer Rabbit being thrown into the briar patch," Pendergast tells D'Agosta, "because I have found you here, in charge. Just like when we first met, back at the Museum of Natural History."

But neither Pendergast nor D'Agosta are prepared for what lies ahead. A diabolical presence is haunting the greater metropolitan area, and Grace Ozmian was only the first of many victims to be murdered . . . and decapitated. Worse still, there's something unique to the city itself that has attracted the evil eye of the killer.

As mass hysteria sets in, Pendergast and D'Agosta find themselves in the crosshairs of an opponent who has threatened the very lifeblood of the city. It'll take all of Pendergast's skill to unmask this most dangerous foe-let alone survive to tell the tale.

The next thrilling installment of the Max Revere series by New York Times bestseller Allison Brennan, on the heels of the first crossover with Lucy Kincaid.

Investigative reporter Max Revere has cracked many cases, but the one investigation she's never attempted is the mystery from her own past. Her mother abandoned her when she was nine, walking out and never reappearing in Max's life. Yet in this next enthralling thriller from Allison Brennan, Max finds herself in a small town on Chesapeake Bay with a single clue--that her mother's car disappeared here years ago--and a lot to uncover.

As Max investigates, and her mother's story begins to unfold, she realizes that Martha Revere was even worse than the woman Max has always believed her to be. She teamed up with a con man, played a sort of Bonnie to his Clyde, and even had another child, which she also abandoned, just like she had Max. But as Max tries to untangle her mother's fate and get to know her teenaged half-sister, the only thing she might succeed in doing is bringing them all closer to the same kind of violent end she fears her mother encountered.

New York Times bestselling author Allison Brennan weaves the intimate, unputdownable story of an investigator confronting the most important--and most dangerous--mystery of her career.

Gideon Crew--brilliant scientist, master thief, intrepid adventurer--is shocked when his former employer, Eli Glinn, vanishes without a trace, and Glinn's high-tech lab Effective Engineering Solutions shuts down seemingly overnight.

Fresh off a diagnosis that gives him only months to live, Crew is contacted by one of his former coworkers at EES, Manuel Garza, who has a bead on one final treasure hinted at in EES's final case, the long-awaited translation of a centuries-old stone tablet of a previously undiscovered civilization: The Phaistos Disc.

What lies at the end of the trail will either save Gideon's life--or bring it to a sudden, shocking close. Crew once again faces incredible odds--but as Gideon has proved again and again, there's no such thing as too great a risk when you're living on borrowed time.

Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs return to New York City from their honeymoon in Italy to discover a killer is terrorizing New York City. Dubbed the Fiancé Killer, their latest foe targets newly engaged couples by following them into jewelry stores, ending the couples' lives just before they can purchase the ring that symbolizes the future that will never be theirs.

As panic grips the city, Rhyme and Sachs quickly spring into action with the full weight of the NYPD backing up the pair's forensic brilliance. But the killer proves elusive, and his agenda is much more than first meets the eye.

Soon it becomes clear that the closer Rhyme and Sachs draw to the killer, the closer the killer draws to them. And their foe soon notices that there's something especially arresting about the ring Rhyme gave Sachs--something that could cost both of them their lives.

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author comes a new explosive thriller featuring forensic sculptor Eve Duncan.

Iris Johansen returns with a thrilling novel of action and danger where fan favorite Eve Duncan is thrown once more into a deadly game of intrigue. It begins when Eve receives a package containing a skull—and instructions for Eve to do her work reconstructing it. When she does, a beautiful woman’s face emerges. But when Eve is introduced to the dead woman’s mirror image, a game is on where her twin’s life hangs in the balance.

#BookReview The Burial Hour by Jeffery Deaver @GrandCentralPub

The Burial Hour by Jeffery Deaver
My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

The only leads in a broad-daylight kidnapping are the account of an eight-year-old girl, some nearly invisible trace evidence and the calling card: a miniature noose left lying on the street. A crime scene this puzzling demands forensic expertise of the highest order. Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs are called in to investigate.

Then the case takes a stranger turn: a recording surfaces of the victim being slowly hanged, his desperate gasps the backdrop to an eerie piece of music. The video is marked as the work of The Composer...

Despite their best efforts, the suspect gets away. So when a similar kidnapping occurs on a dusty road outside Naples, Rhyme and Sachs don't hesitate to rejoin the hunt. But the search is now a complex case of international cooperation - and not all those involved may be who they seem. All they can do is follow the evidence, before their time runs out.

**********

The Burial Hour is book 13 in the Lincoln Rhyme series and once again Deaver shows what a fantastic writer he is.

I have to admit that I was not as taken with this book as I was with Steel Kiss the book before, at least not in the beginning. Don't take me wrong, the book is good, well-written, with an interesting case that will bring Rhyme and Sachs all the way to Italy. However, I was not impressed with the kidnapper. The Composer just never struck me as a very interesting villain. Not compared to other villains that Rhyme and Sachs have had to stop in previous books. However, this is Deaver we are talking about, around 100 pages before the book ended did it seem that they have closed the case which surprised me. I mean there is a lot of more pages to fill out, it can't be this simple? And, it was not. It's towards the end that Dever pulls the rug out from the reader's feet and twist the story, and suddenly wow! This is what I'm talking about, now the story of the book suddenly become very intense.

The Burial Hour is a great book. I love that the book story takes place in Italy. That really made me eager to try out more crime books set in Italy. The contrast between the Italian law enforcement and the American was interesting to observe and I came to like Ercole Benelli, the Forestry officer that Rhyme and Sache worked it, very much.

I want to thank the publisher for providing me with a free copy for an honest review!

The Steel Kiss by Jeffery Deaver

The Steel Kiss by Jeffery Deaver
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Amelia Sachs is hot on the trail of a killer. She's chasing him through a department store in Brooklyn when an escalator malfunctions. The stairs give way, with one man horribly mangled by the gears. Sachs is forced to let her quarry escape as she jumps in to try to help save the victim. She and famed forensic detective Lincoln Rhyme soon learn, however, that the incident may not have been an accident at all, but the first in a series of intentional attacks. They find themselves up against one of their most formidable opponents ever: a brilliant killer who turns common products into murder weapons. As the body count threatens to grow, Sachs and Rhyme must race against the clock to unmask his identity--and discover his mission--before more people die.

**********

It's been a while since I read a Lincoln Rhyme book; I have actually missed reading the two previous books in the series. But nerveless, it felt really good to return to this series since I like the main characters so much. There is some friction between Amelia and Lincoln in this book. She is upset that he has quit the force to work as a teacher, and she also has some personal problems with her mother being ill. Lincoln has taken on a Juliette Archer as an intern, and I was a bit worried Deaver was setting up this to be some kind of love-triangle. And, then Nick Carelli, Amelia ex-boyfriend showed up in the story, and I was really worried this would turn into a love drama. But I needed not worry. THE STEEL KISS is a Deaver book, and he know what he is doing.
