#BookReview Hämnaren (The Avenger) by Jan-Erik Fjell SWE/ENG

Hämnaren by Jan-Erik Fjell
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

ENGLISH REVIEW

San Francisco 1960s. Norwegian-born sixteen-year-old Danny is sentenced to a lifetime in prison for armed robbery and assassination of a police. He ends up at the infamous Alcatraz prison. Over thirty years later, a Norwegian couple is visiting the now closed prison and a man tells them the remarkable story of the young Norwegians.

In today's Fredrikstad, the single mother of a teenager is found murdered. Anton Brekke, who has been demoted to patrol, is one of the first to come to the murder scene and he takes all the means to get back as a detective inspector and be able to solve the case.

Brekke realizes that more people are going to die, and he also detects worrying links to the story of Danny.

The Revenge is the third stand-alone book about the confident and rude detective inspector Anton Brekke.

**********

Alcatraz. I have to admit that I loved the fact that part of the story took place in the famous prison. I mean Alcatraz, is there any more famous prison? It would be Devil's Island (see Dreyfus affair), but personally, I find that there it's something special with Alcatraz and that made me really appreciate this story.

The previous two books are really good so I wasn't surprised that this book turned out pt be really good as well. I had a blast reading this book and returning to Anton Brekke's world. I especially enjoyed that he has been degraded because of his poker obsession. The murder case is nothing that he should be working on, but he just can't stop himself from investigating it. And, the case keeps on getting more complicated as more people turn up dead and there seem to be something that connects the people that are killed, but what is the connection and what has Alcatraz to do with the killings?

I think that so far The Avenger is my favorite book about Brekke. I liked both the present murder case as well as the story from Alcatraz. And the great fun is to try to figure out what's the connection.

#BookReview Smugglaren (The Smuggler) by Jan-Erik Fjell (@JanErikFjell) @Marablaise

Smugglaren by Jan-Erik Fjell
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

ENGLISH REVIEW

It's close to Christmas and small-time criminal Bernandas from Lithuania is traveling to Norway with a sealed cargo, commissioned by the Russian gangster boss Doskino. But the contact to receive the cargo never shows up at the destined meeting place at a remote cabin outside Fredrikstad. When Bernandas understands what the cargo is that he has smuggled across the border, is he struck by panic. The next day, the old teacher Viggo Holm is found to be a brutal knife murderer in his home in Sarpsborg, and it turns out he was Bernard's contact. A reluctant Anton Brekke gets the case, and as he begins to follow the tracks, Bernardas fights desperately to get out of the trap he stuck in - stranded in a foreign country with the police on one side and the Russian gangster boss Doskino on the other.

**********

Book two in the Anton Brekke series is just some the first book, The Informer, thrilling and well-written. However, The Smuggler felt like a more brutal and cruel story than that of The Informer. For sensitive readers, do I wanna warn of a brutal rape scene.

Now the book is not through dark and gloomy, Anton Brekke and the newly graduated policeman Magnus Torp lighten the mood and then we have that little problem that Anton's ex-wife who has found a new man and no matter how much Anton is digging in the man's background, can't he find something wrong with the man.

As for the case. For Anton Brekke is the murder of Viggo Holm a difficult mystery to crack. Who would kill an old teacher? And why? Could the answer lie in the past? Together with his colleague Ole Kval and Magnus Torp, does Anton begin digging in the past and the more they dig, the more it seems that old Viggo had some pretty dark secrets.

The Smuggler is a strong sequel to The Informer. I found it hard to stop reading the book and I just love the short chapter form of the book. Only one chapter was my mantra while I read this book. The end surprised me, I really did not expect it to end that way. And now I want to have a book three!

#BookReview Angivaren (The Informer) by Jan-Erik Fjell (@JanErikFjell)

Angivaren by Jan-Erik Fjell
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

SWEDISH REVIEW

I Fredrikstad hittas stans rikaste man mördad och kriminalkommissarie Anton Brekke kallas in.

ENGLISH REVIEW

Fredrikstad's richest man is assassinated and DI Anton Brekke is called in. Brekke is famous for being unruly and rude, and he also has a secret vice: poker. He starts to investigate the case, with the help of police student Magnus Torp and police inspector Simon Haugen, and it looks like economic motives may be the cause of the murder.

But, he soon realizes that completely different forces lie behind it when he is when he is thrown into the corrupt underworld of New York, straight into the mafia. In The Informer are two parallel stories cleverly combined into a solid and surprising scheme.

This is the first book about criminal commissioner Anton Brekke.

**********

Meet Anton Brekke, Norway's answer to Dirty Harry in Angivaren (The Informer), the first book about the willful cop. I have to admit that I was a bit hesitant about the book. I was worried that Anton's gambling addiction would dominate the book. But, it was apparent from the beginning when I was sitting worried that he would play away all his money that this vice is something that only increases my interest in reading the book

Another part that really made me fond of the book was the link to the mafia. Like Anton, I'm fascinated by the mafia and reading about a case that has links to New York's lower world was both interesting and exciting. The case also has something that I really like and it's the connections to the past. Love books where the answer is in the past.

The book is straight true entertaining to read, with just the kind of humor I like when it comes to detectives novels with a dominated male company. Anton is something of a womanizer, but not slimy in an unpleasant way, but rather a mischievously way.

The Informer is an excellent book, and I look forward to reading the remaining books in the series and I hope there will be many more books published!

Bout of Books 19: Reading list

Next week the Bout if Books readathon starts and it doesn't really come a good time, to be honest. since I started Assassin's Fate by Robin Hobb just a couple of days ago and it will take me some days to finish the book since it's almost 1000 pages. I do plan to listen to some Swedish audiobooks (perfect for outdoor walks, working etc.) and try to read some ebooks if I get some time over. I will not set any goals, instead, will I enjoy this week and try to read as much as possible.
